Happy 4th Mama!
Every July 4th, we gather as a nation to celebrate freedom. Fireworks fill the skies, families come together, and we’re reminded of the hard-won liberties that define the United States. But this year, I found myself reflecting on what freedom really means — for moms, for families, and for the communities we serve.
That simple but profound statement reminds us that freedom is not just something we inherit or are given. It’s an ongoing opportunity — and a responsibility — to improve ourselves, our communities, and the systems that shape our lives.
For many of us, this year has already made it clear that our work is far from over. The passing of the so-called Big Beautiful Bill, with its harmful impact on families, underfunded programs, and deepened inequities, is a sobering example. Even as we celebrate, we must also take stock: who stood with the people, and who sold us out?
Freedom gives us the chance to demand better, to speak out, to advocate, and to hold those in power accountable. It also gives us the chance to care for ourselves — to choose rest, joy, and resilience even in the face of struggle.
So what does being better look like right now?
✅ For some of us, it means showing up at school board and council meetings, making sure our voices are heard.
✅ For others, it means teaching our children what civic engagement really looks like.
✅ For all of us, it means refusing to let setbacks silence us — and voting accordingly when the time comes.
And perhaps most importantly, it means not forgetting to care for ourselves. Freedom without wellbeing isn’t really freedom. Taking time to rest, reflect, and recharge is part of the fight, too.
Here at Black Mom Society we remain committed to helping you navigate both sides of this journey: standing up for what’s right, and taking care of yourself while you do it.
